We really got to meet a lot of great people throughout this charity walk. Having written about our stay with Stu and Grace, today I will write about our visit with Mary-Jean and Conrad while we were in Calgary.
We arrived at their place in time for dinner at the end of the day's walking. And so, our first shot is of us together around the table.☆
Mary-Jean is Steve's Dad's cousin. It was my pleasure to meet them both for the first time - they are such pleasant, kind and friendly people! As for their house: it is gorgeous! I couldn't capture it all in my photos...
On this trip, I was thoroughly amazed by the size of Canadian homes!
This is the view from their living room window. A distant view of the Rocky Mountains. It had been cloudy on the day we arrived, but it cleared up the next day and the scenery was beautiful!(*^_^*)
In the backyard there were places to relax which the two of them enjoyed. When we first arrived, that is where we too were invited to relax and enjoy some wine and cheese. We enjoyed this as much as possible, but so did the mosquitoes - so after a while we went inside. It really is a lovely yard!
The yard was so big I shouldn't call it a yard, but rather an acreage! I learned from them how they have little by little built-up the design. Through out the yard there were touches of creativity and details that gave me a sense as to how treasured this space was. Depending on the season, deer and moose will even venture into the yard! To have such large animals around even though this is not a place out in the woods somewhere, but rather a place on the edge of a suburban area - I felt that this was just so "Canadian"!
One of my favorite places in their yard was this rock garden.
Apparently when it warms up a little more, the blossoms on this cactus will bloom! Mary-Jean told me they are really beautiful. It was too bad I didn't have a chance to see them. Surprisingly, even after the severely cold Canadian winter, this cactus keeps blooming year after year! "Sugoi!" (Impressive!)
About the inside of the house, one final thing I would like to share are the many African pieces. The guest room where we stayed was an absolutely lovely room decorated with an African theme!
Mary-Jean has traveled to Kenya many times, and Conrad has also been there once! They are very fond of Kenya. During our stay with them, we had a chance to look at their travel pictures. Simply put, it was very much like the images that are conjured up when someone mentions "The Lion King". The Kenyan scenery and wildlife make a powerful impression. There was a close-up shot of a lion that still stands out in my mind: "Wow, you must have had a very powerful lens to take this one!", I said. I couldn't believe it when they told me that it wasn't so much the lens as it was that they were actually very close to the lion! I didn't take a picture , unfortunately, but Mary-Jean also showed me a traditional red blanket worn by people of the Masai tribe. I really enjoyed hearing about Africa, and now more and more I want to visit my friend Eddah's home country!(●^o^●)
On the final day of our visit, we made Maki Zushi together!
Here we are enjoying the sushi!
お寿司もおしゃれに見えますか?(^.^) Doesn't our sushi fit in well with the beautiful surroundings?(^.^)
Mary-Jean and Conrad, thank you so much for everything! I was really grateful for the lovely time you showed us and it was so fun to share so many great stories! I look forward to seeing you both again someday!
The following pictures are various shots I took around Calgary☆
Maybe hard to tell from this picture, but this was a cute street with lots of shops!
A statue I found downtown. This was right in front of the Art Gallery.
This is an old church I saw while walking downtown.
We also saw this while walking around downtown.
Central Park. You can see the Calgary Tower in the background.
This reminded me of a Cherry Blossom tree. (but it's not)
War Memorial
The busiest street downtown!
I really felt like Calgary is a big city. My impression was that it is maybe a little bit smaller than Hiroshima. Overall, I had a good impression of this city(^.^)
Our last stop before leaving Calgary was this place ↓↓
We stopped at Peter's Drive-In, a famous burger stand. It is obviously a popular spot! There were tons of people lined up, and this was at 7:00 on a weekday! I can only imagine what it must be like on the weekend!
