TANAKA in KANATA: Special visitors! (2)

行ったり来たりですが、また私の両親のカナダ訪問の様子の続きをお伝えします(*^^)v
I know that I am all over the place here in my story telling, but I want to return to the continuation of my parents' visit!

私の父の1日は、これから始ります（＾＾）
This is how my father began his day every day of his visit here（＾＾）

毎日、気温をチェックしてました！この日はあんまり寒くないですね！

Everyday he would check the temperature outside! Although it was December, the days they were here were not cold at all!

ちなみに、下の気温は先週の水曜日（1月18日）のものです。今年初の－30℃でした！

これくらい寒いのを両親にも体験して欲しかったのですが、実際はとても厳しい気候なので、来てもらった時の気候が良かったかなぁ・・・と思っています。

Incidentally, the picture below is of the temperature here last Wednesday (January 18th). It was the first time this year that the temperature dipped below minus 30℃! I really wish that my parents could have experienced this kind of severe weather - but on the other hand, it was nice that the weather was so agreeable while they were here.

さて、話は戻って、この日は何をしたかというと、もちろん、エドモントンと言えば・・・のウエスト・エドモントン・モールです(*^_^*)

Anyway, getting back to what we did that day: of course one of the places that must be visited in Edmonton is West Edmonton Mall(*^_^*)

ウィキピディアの情報によると、ウェスト・エドモントン・モールは2004年までは世界最大のショッピングモールだったそうで、現在は世界5位の大きさ。施設内には、800個以上のお店やサービス施設があり、駐車場では20000台以上の車が駐車できるようになっているそうです。

According to Wikipedia, West Edmonton Mall was the biggest shopping center in the world up until 2004. It is presently ranked 5th in the world. There are more than 800 stores and the surrounding parking lot can accommodate in excess of 20000 cars.

モールの中にはいろいろなテーマの場所があります。私たちもモールの中のいろいろな場所で写真を撮りました。

There are a variety of special attractions within the mall. We took a lot of pictures of the various things to see there.

この海賊船ではデッキで飲食ができたり、船の反対側ではアシカのショーもありました。昔は潜水艦もあったそうで、潜水艦にのって水中を探検できたそうです。

On the big ship seen in the picture above, the deck can be rented-out for special functions, and on the other side of the ship there is a live animal show featuring several seals. There even use to be submarines that would take people around for an underwater adventure.

クリスマス前だったので、もちろん、サンタクロースがモールに来ていたり・・・☆

It was a week or so before Christmas, so of course Santa Clause (or was it Santa's helper?) was on hand to hear for pictures and to meet with children.

施設内には遊園地もあり、ジェットコースターが走ってますー！その他いろいろのアトラクションもあります（＾＾）1日遊園地の場所で過ごすこともできるくらいです。

In another section of the mall, there is an amusement park complete with a massive roller coaster! There are also several other rides! So many, in fact, that you could easily spend an entire day there!

そして、もちろん、アイスリンクもあります。この日のこの時間帯はフィギアスケートの練習で使われていましたが、一般の人がその場でスケートできる時間帯や、幼児向けのスケート教室などでも使われています。

And, of course, there was also an ice rink. On this day, the ice seemed to be reserved for figure skating practice, but this rink is also open to the public for free skating as well as for children's skating lessons!

いや～、やっぱり広いねぇーとモールを満喫した私たちは、外にでます！

キャンディーケーン・レーンといって、１つの通りにある両サイドの家々がライトアップしている通りです。１ｋｍくらいはあるんじゃないでしょうか。

Wow! That mall was really huge and impressive!! We enjoyed it thoroughly and headed back outside. We headed over to a place called "Candy Cane Lane", about a 1km stretch of homes where every year all the houses on both sides of the street make a special effort to decorate their homes with Christmas lights.

外を歩いて、すっかり体が冷えた私たちは、MIKADOという日本食レストランに行きました。カナダに来て、日本食がどんな風に出されているか見てもらおうとのアイディアです(*^_^*)

It had become quite cold out that night, so after a good walk around, we headed over to warm up and dig in to some delicious Japanese food at a restaurant called Mikado. We wanted my parents to experience a sample of what Japanese food is like here in Canada (*^_^*)

定番の寿司、天ぷら、サッポロビール、焼き肉定食などなど食べました。巻きずしは、フィラデルフィア巻き（写真左）というのがあって、それはスモークサーモンとクリームチーズというコンビネーションでした。もう１つはエビ天巻き（写真右）です。やっぱり、生の魚を使った巻きずしが少ないように感じます。でも、刺身もメニューにあるので、生魚もちゃんとあります（＾＾）

Standard sushi, tempura, Sapporo beer, yaki niku, we tried it all! We also ordered some original styles of makizushi, like the Philidelphia maki which contained cream cheese and smoked salmon (seen in the picture on the left). Another one was a shrimp tempura maki (picture on the right). As you might expect, makizushi containing raw fish are not quite as common or abundant as they would be in Japan. But there was also a Sashimi platter on the menu, so there is raw fish available.

明くる日。

この日は、エドモントンのダウンタウンに行く予定です。が、その前に、Sｔ. Albertにある、『グレイン・エレベーター（穀物倉庫）』を見に行きました。

The next day.

This day we decided to go have a look at downtown Edmonton. But first, we made a quick visit to the famous grain elevators here in St.Albert. They have been restored and are now a historic sight.

市役所裏にある川のそばで。母の日にカヌーをしたのはこの川です。今は凍った上に雪が積もっているので、ただの雪野原に見えます。↑

Here we are near the river down by city hall. This is the same river that we went canoeing on back on Mother's Day. Being frozen and covered in snow, it looks like a snow covered field.

これも、市役所の横にあるモニュメント。原住民アーティストの作品です。

These are some stone sculptures just beside the city hall. They are works crafted by a First Nations artist.

では、ここからダウンタウンに移動です！

And then we went from downtown St.Albert, to downtown Edmonton!

Hotel MacDonald (made in connection with the Canadian Railway, it is an old and historic building, and still functions as a luxury hotel today)

そして、この日最後の観光スポットは、州議事堂。エドモントンはアルバータ州の首都なので、州議事堂があります（＾＾）

And the final stop for sightseeing on this day was the Provincial Legislature. Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta.

We spotted a wild rabbit!

この日の夜はSteveの実家にご飯をよばれに行きました。写真はありませんが、サーモン、おいしかったです(*^_^*)下の写真は、肩こりがひどいKarinaに私の母が肩もみしています(^_-)海を越えて、肩もみサービスいいですね☆
That night we were invited to dinner at Steve's parents' place. It was so delicious I completely forgot to take any pictures of the meal! It was a delicious salmon! The picture below is of my mom giving Karina's stiff shoulders a good massage. Overseas shoulder massage service is hard to beat!
