Jasper

The next day we set out to enjoy doing some activities around Jasper!

Thanks to the big feast we enjoyed the night before, we had no need (and no room) for breakfast or lunch! So enjoying some activities became the full focus of our day! First we went to check out one of Jasper's most beautiful sights: Maligne Canyon!

Maligne Canyon is also one of Jasper's most popular sights.  In the summertime, there is a trail that runs along the edge of the canyon, with several bridges crossing over it where you can hike along and look down into the  rushing waters way at the bottom of the narrow canyon.  In the winter season, the waters in the canyon freeze, creating the opportunity to hike along the bottom of the canyon on an "Ice Walk".  There are guided tours that outfit and lead groups of tourists on these Ice Walks, but we checked it out and decided that we could do it ourselves.
On the road heading out to Maligne Canyon
Soon enough, again we saw some wildlife!
It's fun trying to identify animals I've never seen before!  I thought this was maybe a deer?...but this area is a common for Caribou, so maybe a Caribou? The big ears seem bigger than what I imagine a deer's ears to be...
It was interesting to see lots of signs reminding people that it is illegal (and dangerous) to feed wildlife
We arrived at Maligne Canyon!
As you can see behind Steve, there is a fence that runs along the hiking trail.  We came down along this trail.

There are 6 bridges that enable the trail to criss-cross the canyon.  The one in the background here is the "2nd Bridge"  We started at the top at the 1st Bridge and made our way down.
The water-blue coloured ice that is down at the bottom of the canyon is the frozen river!

We couldn't find a safe way to get down into the canyon from our first stop, so we opted to drive down to where the trail starts at the other end of the canyon.  On our way, wouldn't you know it, we again met-up with (the same two?) caribou!

They were just taking it easy and checking us out as we carefully drove-by.
Here is the Bridge 5 starting point!  After crossing this suspension bridge, we again found the hiking trail.

At this bridge, we met another couple who told us that the Ice Walking seemed to be between the 4th and 3rd bridges and that it seemed best to take the trail down by the river.
So, we walked-up the trail a bit and we could see fresh foot prints that formed a trail by the river that lead up-river and into the canyon.  We decided that judging from the footprints on the trail we would need some extra grip on our boots, and factored that into our plans to return and do our own walk up the canyon the next day.

Next, we went to Pyramid Lake to do some cross-country skiing on the lake!
Can you see how the mountain in the background kind of looks like a pyramid?
The snow that is on the frozen surface of the lake makes it possible to ski right on the lake!  There were tracks set for skiing, so it is easy to set your skis in the tracks and ski smoothly around the lake.
Steve hung back and took these pictures of me as I skied away.  These pics really give perspective to what a huge area it was.  (the sequence of the pictures is upper-left, upper-right, lower left, lower right).  We followed the loop on the lake around once, and then I was exhausted!
It turns out that, as Steve's parents later told me, this lake was another spot that they often came to on family camping trips in the summer when he was a child: they would go canoeing and swimming here.  Although it is hard to imagine when looking at it now, it must be beautiful here in the summertime as well!
Skiing wasn't all we did!  As well as a ski track, this lake also had a skating track!  This is a natural skating rink!  The surface was really rough and I almost fell down so many times! When I was in Japan, never did I even imagine I'd ever be skating on a lake!!

We hadn't eaten all day, so after skiing and skating our appetites were back in full force!  Before heading back to our hotel, we decided to go out for a little something called poutine!  This was my FIRST TIME to taste poutine!!!
I had heard about poutine the first time I came to Canada, but I had never tried it.  With French Canadian roots, poutine is a brilliantly tasty concoction of French Fries topped with gravy and melted cheese. Rather than a dish that is part of a meal, it is more of a dish to share while having a beer.  As I'm sure you can tell just by looking, it's not the healthiest food in the world.  In an effort to be health conscious, Steve admitted that we should probably limit ourselves to 1 poutine a year.  But since it was soooo delicious, (and technically, there are two of us!) the next night we opted to order it again!

In the next blog entry, I will post the pictures of our hike through Maligne Canyon! Enjoy!!
