Canada Day

カナダ・デーとは、毎年7月1日に祝われるカナダの建国記念日で、祝日です。この日は、屋外のイベントが多く、私たちが参加したようなパレードや花火、お祭りなどが催されます(*^_^*)スティーブのお母さんのJoanさんがボランティアをしている近所のボタニック・ガーデンでも、その日には子どもたちが花を植える体験ができるようなイベントをしたり、カナダグッツを訪れた人にあげたそうです✿
Canada Day is a national day of celebration of Canada's birthday - the day Canada became a country in its own right.  There are lots of fun events held outdoors, such as the parades we took part in, fireworks and other festivities (*^_^*)  Even down at the Botanic Park where Steve's mom volunteers, there was a special event held where children could plant flowers and other such activities as well as plenty of little Canada themed gifts were handed out.    

私にとって初めてのカナダ・デーを旅の途中のCanmoreとBanffで体験することになりましたが、こんなに盛大にパレードをするとは知らなかったですし、自分が実際に参加するなんて、それこそ想像もしていませんでした。
As for me, my first Canada Day took place in Canmore and Banff during our Walk for Japan event.  I was amazed by all of the hype and fanfare!  I had no idea there would be such huge parades...(let alone that I would actually be in not one, but two of them!).  It was an experience beyond anything I would have imagined!

さて、そのパレードにはどんな人が参加していたかというと、
So, let's have a look at who was taking part in the parades in Canmore and Banff,

Even we were invited to be in the parade!  （＾＾）

Steveの後ろを私が車で付いていくという形をとりましたが、私たちの車は次のようにデコレーションされていきます・・
I drove our vehicle in the parade, with Steve walking out front.  Here is a look at how we had the car decorated.

ハンドルの前にも大きなカナダの国旗をかざりました。
We had lots of decorations on the windows as well as a Canadian and Japanese flag.
We also put a full sized Canadian flag on the dashboard (and later across the hood) .

We also did our best to decorate our vehicle with some carefully placed flags (^_-)

 Canmoreでのパレードは朝の11時から始まりましたが、たくさんの人が見にきていました。中には「ガンバレ～！」と日本語での声援をかけてくれる方もおられましたし、拍手で応援してくれる方がいました。これはBanffでもCanmoreでも一緒でした。本当にみんながカナダデーでしたが、私たちが通る時は日本のことも応援してくれました。
The Canmore parade started at 11:00, and lots of people were out to watch!  There were plenty of spectators who applauded us and we even heard a few "Gambare-!!"s from the crowd!  Everyone was out to celebrate Canada Day, but when we passed by they were also cheering for Japan.  

バンフでのパレードは午後4時からで、雰囲気が少し違いましたが、浴衣などを着た日本人のグループが、震災後にたくさんバンフエリアの人から義援金をいただいたお礼にと、「ありがとうございます」のサインを持って参加していたり、本物のカーボーイがいたりとまたそこでもいい体験ができました。
The parade in Banff was at 4 in the afternoon, the atmosphere was a little bit different.  There was also a group of local Japanese residents who were nicely dressed-up in yukata's and such, who pulled a sign in the parade in an effort to thank the local people for all the support and donations towards disaster recovery in Japan.  There were also lots of horses and real-life cowboys and cowgirls in the parade!  It was again, quite an experience for me!

馬に乗ってパレードに参加する人がたくさんいましたが、一方でカルカリーからのマーチングバンドもたくさん数多く参加していました。下のスライドショーでカーボーイハットをかぶった群衆はまさにそれです（＾＾）しかし、馬は大きな音に驚いてしまうので、馬とマーチングバンドは近くに配置できないとのことで、パレードの順番を調整する人は本当に大変そうでした。
私たちは本当は日本人のグループとバンフでは歩く予定でしたが、馬とマーチングバンドに挟まれて、それが実現できませんでした。
In addition to plenty of horses, there were also several marching bands from Calgary participating in the parade.  As you can see in the slideshow here below, the group of people all wearing cowboy hats is just one of the marching bands.  Considering that horses don't react well to loud noises, and enter to the mix "every marching band in Calgary" showing up (as one of the frazzled organizers put it), it quickly became a logistical nightmare.
We were suppose to walk together with the local Japanese group, but unfortunately we ended up getting caught between the horses and marching bands.


パレードの合間では、他の場所で行われているイベントに行って、イベントの紹介／日本についての紹介を地道にしました。
In between parades, we went to the local events and set up a display to showcase our event and talk about Japan.

This is the park where we attended the Rotary Club's pancake breakfast in the morning.

エドモントンで知り合いになったユキさんが作られた「がんばろう日本●」のリストバンドも売りました。
売上は日本赤十字に行きます。
We were also able to collect some donations by offering some wristbands that our friend back in Edmonton, Yukiko makes as her Disaster Relief fundraising project.

Canmore在住のサトシさんは当日お会いして、その後も何度も顔を見せてくださりサポートしてくださいました。
We met a Japanese man who is living in Canmore.  We were glad to meet Satoshi-san! 

初めてのカナダ・デー。忙しい1日でしたが、特別な経験ができました(*^_^*)
This was my first Canada Day!  It was a busy day, and an unforgettable experience(*^_^*)
