Rodeo/ロデオ

『ラウンドアップ』のパレードに行ってから、スティーブは私のために「ロデオの大会に行けたら、良い経験になるのになぁー」言っていました。
そんな中、偶然にもスティーブのご両親が、ご近所さんにロデオのチケットを持っているのにちょうど行けないという方の話を聞いて、その方からチケットを譲っていただけることになりました！また、ロデオと一緒に開かれている農業フェアの入場券もいただけたので、私たちは幸運にも両方のイベントに行く事ができました。
(**Warning, in honour of the Cowboy Culture in Alberta, this time translations are done in "Cowboy English". Yeeeehaw!)  After taking me on-down to the ol' "Round-Up" parade, Stevie-boy kept-on about how, as far as he was concerned, going to see the Rodeo would be another great "first" experience for me (and for him!).  Cuz like the cowboy code clearly tells it, though unwritten as it may be, Rule #1: Don't be hankerin' for yer buddy's stuff.  Rule # 2: If there's a rodeo in town, you best be taking yer lady to it! (but let's never forget, for Steve's own brother's sake, Rule #3: Don’t squat on your Spurs!)
Well, as luck would have it, some folks down the way had some tickets they couldn't use and, well, lettin' something like that go to waste is as bad to this buckaroo as fergettin' to honour yer ma n' pa! So we done mozy on-down early openin' night to check out what these days their callin' the Agricultural Exhibition.

家畜や馬の説明、トラクターなど農業に関すること全ての教育ホール
I be damned if that exhibition didn't have just about one of everything!
This here picture has reminds me of two things:
1- Never approach a Bull from the front, a Horse from the rear, or a Fool from any direction.
2- Don’t worry ‘bout bitin’ off more than you can chew, your mouth is bigger’n you think.

キャンピングカーの中でした(^^)　ということで、隣のホールはショッピングホールでした。カーボーイハット／ブーツのお店などウェスタンスタイルのお店がたくさんあり、見ているだけも楽しかったです。
Hats, boots, n' stuff fer horses! It was a regular Cowboy Candy Shop!

左下の写真は、馬を移動させる車で、上のキャンピングカーのようにトラックに付けてひっぱります。日本では見たことありませんでしたが、こちらでは住宅地の通りを歩いていると時々この「馬車」を見ます。

次のホールは、牛のショーホールでした。
Livestock competition.  Them be prize steers!

今までこんなにたくさんの種類の牛を見た事がなかったので、興味深かったです。それに、実際に牛を見るとその大きさに驚きます！（ちなみに、左下の黒い牛は、飼い主から風が出るホースをあてられていて、ドライヤーをあててもらっているようで気持ちよさそうでした。）

十分に農業フェアを楽しんだところで、ここからが『ロデオ』です！！

場所は、アイスホッケースタジアムでした。

After gettin' our fill at the fair, we swaggered over to the rodeo which was being held in the city's main hockey arena.

But as you can see here, the ice had been replaced with mud n' manure, the hockey stars replace with Cowboys.

私たちの席は競技場に近いところでした。（この写真で言うと、下の段の中央あたりでした。）

Our seats were down nice n' close to the action (which was good, cuz otherwise we mighta had our view blocked on account of a lotta folks were wearing their cowboy hats!)

時間がくると、まずはカントリーシンガーの歌、次は競技者の一人一人の紹介と徐々に雰囲気が盛り上がっていきます！

The competition started-off with a Country song followed by each cowboy being introduced as they walked out into the spotlight in an opening ceremony of sorts.

『ロデオ』ファイナルといっても、競技種目はいろいろありました。

私は全くロデオのルールは知りませんでしたし、今もはっきりとは分っていませんが、最も基本的なルールは「８秒間片手だけで、暴れる馬や牛の上に乗ること」です。何となく分ったことは、乗っている競技者の格好の良さや、どれくらい馬や牛が回転したかも得点に加算されるようです。

常に動く競技なので、うまく写真が撮れなかったので、デジカメのムービーで撮った画像を載せます。

(this cowboy talkin' is tuff to keep up!) There are various events at the Canadian Finals Rodeo. I still don't understand all the rules, but we figured out the basics:  Holding on for dear life with one hand and the other hand raised the rider tries to ride for 8 seconds and gets scored by judges (kinda like in figure skating, but with more horses). The score reflects the rider's form and the difficulty of the cow or horse.

１つめは、鐙なしの馬のロデオ。（鐙：乗り手が鞍(くら)に座ったときに、脚をかけるところ。）

Don't stop kickin' till the clock stops tickin'!

２つ目は、2人のうち1人のカーボーイが子牛に飛びかかり、子牛を横に倒す。という種目。

Steer wrastlin'!

３つ目は、牛のロデオ。

A Bull is like a dancing partner, you just have to let him lead.

4つ目は、1人が子牛の首に、もう1人は子牛の後ろ脚に縄をかける種目。

Team Steer ropin'!

5つ目は、鐙ありの馬のロデオ

Whoa Nellie!!

6つ目は、馬に乗りながらの早打ち。

7つ目は、子牛の首に縄をかけ、最後に脚をしばる種目。スピードを競っていました。

他にもヘルメットをかぶったジュニアがするロデオや、女カーボーイの馬のレースなどなどがありました。

いろいろな競技の中で、私が気に入ったのは、競技後の馬や牛を世話して会場から出してやる役割のカーボーイです。見事な馬・牛さばき、綱さばきにすごいなぁと競技より興味津々で見てしまいました。

There was also a junior rodeo for a few younger competitors and a women's barrel racing event.

What I found to be even more impressive than the events were the helpers (and their horses!!): two cowboys on horseback whose job it was to skillfully chase-down and lasso the bulls, steer or calm and guide-out horses used in the competition. They'd also swoop in to save riders, who would jump from the bucking horse and hitch a ride to safety from the helper.  It was really amazing!  

ロデオについては、動物虐待ではないかという意見もあります。実際に、ラウンドアップのパレードで、抗議のパネルを持っている人を1人見ました。一方で、カーボーイ文化があったり農業が盛んなこの地域では、カーボーイや牛や馬自体に特別な思いを持っている人も多いようで、簡単にどっちがいいと言える事ではないようです。

The rodeo definitely contends with a debate about treatment of animals.  This issue was highlighted by a man protesting animal cruelty at the Round-Up Parade.  The Cowboy culture and those involved in agriculture seem to value and even hold a special respect for these animals. It's not easy to say how the various Rodeo animals feel about it, which is a question that holds varying degrees of importance for people of various opinions.  Regardless, it is a part of Alberta culture that was an eye opening experience for me.
