プロジェクト１ Project #1

Ｓｔｅｖｅのお父さんには大きなプロジェクトが２つあります。
１つは、以前家にあったデッキを取り壊して、新しく自分で一から作ること。
もう１つは、Ｋａｒｉｎａの家の地下室に寝室を作ること。
２つとも、1人で基盤から建設されます。
Steve's father has many projects "on the go". It could be said that right now he is working on two big projects.
Project 1 is the repair (turned complete rebuild) of the deck behind the house!
The other project (which we won't label as Project 2, in case Karina is reading this) is the continual renovation of Karina (Steve's sister, my sister-in-law's) house - presently focusing on finishing the basement!
Although he always gives credit to all of us who support and assist him, it is fair to say that he is single handedly taking-on these projects from the ground-up!

今回は１つめのプロジェクト、プロジェクト１について書きます！
I will focus on Project 1 in this posting.
一昨日は、完成したデッキにカバーをかけて、床をほぼ完成させる日でした。
私たちも手伝ってできたチームワークの結晶です。
A few days back, he was covering the rebuilt structure. 
With a bit of teamwork, we completed the final stage of the structural rebuild.
では、おとといまでにどんな過程を経てデッキができたのか、写真を使って振り返ってみます(^^)。
Here are some shots from last week of what it looked like at that stage...which is an interesting choice of terms because at this point - without a railing - it really does look like an elevated performance stage.  ("Perfect for a Taiko performance!", said Howard)

①私たちがカナダに着いた時は、もう土台はできていたので、デッキに床を付ける作業をされていました。

②デッキの床が完成した日は、それを祝ってデッキの上で乾杯☆をしました！
    An important part, and arguably the best part, of any deck project is celebrating each stage with a drink!

庭の方から見るとこんな感じです（＾＾）走り回れるくらい大きいです！
Here is a shot looking up at the deck from the back of the yard.  As one of Steve's friends said, "It's big enough to play tennis on!!"

これは、日本を訪れた時に、ヒントを得たデザインだそうです↓↓。日本の橋に、このようなデザインかあるのを見て、『これはいい！』と思われたそうです。ここでは展望スペースです(^_-)
Here is a shot which reveals the "Japanese design".  Howard noticed how bridges in Japan often have a look-out area, and was inspired to build out this extra area as a "tip of the hat" to Japanese style.

ではここからは、おととい（10月14日）の作業の様子です！
And now, this week's recent developments!

③Howardさんが手にしている道具を使って、淵につけるカバーと床に段差ができないように、淵に段差を作ります。
The day for laying the deck surface started-off by going back a step by removing the edging put-on the day before, using a router adapted to be used as a planer to lower the edging flush with the deck surface (being careful to further screw-down all the screws that would otherwise clash with the router). Almost done in time for a late lunch! (by Yoshimi, not Steve)

④次は、カバーをかけます！Now for the surface!
まずは、１．道具の準備　⇒　２．カバーの幅の長さを測って　⇒　３．床を掃く　⇒　４．カバーを敷く
                (prep the tools)     (measure-out the area)    (sweep)  (unroll & position the cover sheet)        
５．ホッチキスで半分の端を止める　⇒　６．半分にめくってボンドをまんべんなく塗る　⇒　７．カバーと床の間に空気が入らないように慎重にカバーをかけたら、残りの半分も同じ手順でする。

   Staple down half to secure it, fold back opposite half, glue it down, carefully place cover surface while rolling-out to avoid air pockets, lift-out staples and repeat!

⑥いよいよ最後の1枚に！！！The final piece! Yeah!!!

このカバーを付けてから、3日間そのまま置いておかないといけません。
完成した姿はまた後日ブログに載せます(^^)
